l   slog/slɒɡ/

Definition1: something that is difficult or boring and seems to take a long time

Example: Getting fit doesn't have to be a hard slog.

Definition2: a long and tiring walk

Example: a steep uphill slog

 

l   fume/fjum/

Definition: to feel or show a lot of anger

Example: Citizens are fuming over the latest gas shortages

 

l   convulsion /kənˈvʌlʃən/

Definition1: violent movements of a person's body that they cannot control

Example: The child’s convulsion filled us with fear.

Definition2: a sudden or extreme change that causes major problems or serious harm

Example: The story was so funny that we were all in convulsions.

 

l   mount/maʊnt/

Definition1: if a particular feeling mounts, it gets stronger over a period of time

Example: Tension continues to mount between the two parties.

Definition2: to prepare for and begin an activity or event

Example1: We are mounting a campaign to recruit more volunteers.

Example2: The gallery has just mounted an exhibition of her work.

Definition3: to get on a horse

Example: He lifted up his little son, and mounted him on the horse.

Definition: to say something in a way that is not loud or clear enough so that your words are difficult to understand

Example: He mumbled something about not wanting to go to work.

 

l   blithe /blaɪð/

Definition1: happy and not worried about anything

Example: a blithe spirit

Definition2: ignoring or not realizing the real disadvantages of a situation or the possible bad results of something you do

Example: He showed a blithe indifference to her feelings.

 

l   coax /kəʊks/

Definition1: to make something such as a machine or piece of equipment do what you want it to do by being skilful, gentle, and patient

Example: They coaxed the grand piano through the door.

Definition2: to gently persuade someone to do something or not do something

Example1: After dinner Lily was coaxed into singing several songs.

Example2: Rescuers told how they coaxed a man out of a suicide attempt.

Definition3: to gently persuade someone to tell or give you something

Example: She could coax answers to very personal questions out of people

Definition: to carry or move something with difficulty because it is very heavy

Example: She lugged his bag out into the hall.

 

l   yelp/jelp/

Definition: to make a short loud high sound, usually because you are excited, angry, or in pain

Example: Her dogs were barking and yelping.

 

l   morsel /ˈmɔrs(ə)l/

Definition1: a small piece of food

Example: He had a morsel of food caught between one teeth and another.

Definition2: a small amount of something, especially something good, contained in something else

Example: He hasn’t a morsel of sense.

Definition1: very valuable and impossible to replace

Example: priceless antiques

Definition2: extremely useful in helping you to achieve something

Example: priceless information

Definition1: something that can be bought and sold, especially a basic food product or fuel

Example: In Thailand rice is an important commodity for export.

Definition2: something that is useful or necessary

Example: Time is our most valuable commodity.

Definition1: cloth

Example: Her dress was made of a thin lacy material.

Definition2: a substance, especially one used for a particular purpose

Example: Brick was used as the main building material for local churches.

Definition3: information, ideas, and experiences that you use as the subject of a book, movie, song, etc.

Example: Newspaper articles are a good source of material for stories.

Definition4: documents, etc. that are used for a particular activity

Example: Professors are expected to furnish their own teaching materials

Definition5: someone who is appropriate for a particular job or situation

Example: He wasn't really officer material.

Definition: a piece of clothing. This word is used especially when talking about the production and sale of clothes

Example: The garment workers were being paid very low wages.

Definition: used about things that are better in quality and more expensive than other things of the same type

Example: a deluxe hotel/model/version

 

l   sapling /ˈsæplɪŋ/

Definition: a young tree

Example: The dead elms have been replaced by a row of saplings.

 

l   resentful/rɪˈzentf(ə)l/

Definition: feeling angry and unhappy because you think you have been treated unfairly or without enough respect

Example: He was resentful at the way he had been treated.

 

l   flutter/ˈflʌtər/

Definition1: to move up and down or from side to side with short, quick, light movements, or to make something move in this way

Example: Alexandra's hands were fluttering around his head.

Definition2: if a bird or insect flutters somewhere, it moves by making short, quick, light movements with its wings

Definition: to cut words or pictures into a hard surface such as stone, metal, or glass

Example: a trophy engraved with the winner's name

Definition: to put something in the opposite position to the one it was in before, especially by turning it upside down

Example: She caught the insect by inverting her cup over it.

 

l   exuberance /ɪɡˈzjubərənt/

Definition: happy, excited, and full of energy

Example: an exuberant crowd

 

l   slimy/ˈslaɪmi/

Definition: covered with a thick wet unpleasant substance

Example: a slimy mess of squashed fruit
