本來是想說看英文小說增進閱讀速度的

沒想到對我來說生字太多  根本沒有速度可言      

下面是我看了穿了Prada的惡魔第一章  查的單字 

如果有需要 希望可以幫助到大家

(單字解釋內容來字於朗文字典、奇摩線上字典)

不過我想 這本書會被我先放到冷凍庫擺著 所以只有一章的單字

1.      clutch (vt.) 抓住;攫取 to grasp and hold tightly.

                  (vi.) ,[(+at)]  to attempt to grasp or seize

                   (n.) [C] 抓住;攫取[S1]; 【機】離合器;離合器踏板;起重機抓爪

   

    A drowning man will clutch at a straw. 快溺死的人連一根稻草也要抓

    Take your foot off the clutch after changing gear.   換檔之後,腳離離合器

    She clutched at the branch but could not reach it. 她想抓住樹枝,但抓不著

  clutch pedal  (車輛的) 離合器踏板

  clutch bag   女用無帶提包

  clutch at   試圖抓住  try to hold or seize

grasp (vi 緊抓)grab (vi [尤指怱忙中或怱然]抓住、拿到)、                        grip (v 握牢、咬牢、夾牢)

   He remained neutral during the debate.  他在辯論中保持中立

4. lurch (vi)  to move with irregular swinging or rolling movements 蹣跚,東倒西歪地 向前; 顛簸著行進; ()突然傾斜

  stagger (v)stumble ( v 踉蹌,蹣跚而行;絆腳,絆倒)

5. flip-flop (vi) 啪嗒啪嗒地響(或動)

6. loom (vi.) [+up ] to come into sight wihhout a clear form, esp. so as to seem

                              very  large and threatening, causing fear 

                             隱約地出現(聳現); 陰森地逼近 

             (n.) 隱約呈現的形象

    loom large  to seem great and cause worry or other strong

                             feeling.     赫然聳現; 顯得嚴重

 The specter of war loomed ahead. 戰爭的陰影逼近了

  A ship loomed out of the fog  一艘船在霧中隱約出現

  A figure loomed (up) out of the mist.  一個人影在霧中隠隠出理

  Fear of failure loomed large in his mind.   失敗的擔憂沉重地壓在他的心頭

  The coming examination looms larger with every passing day.

  即將舉行的考試正一天一天地逼近

7. stall (v) [I; T](1) 使熄火;使拋錨;使失速; ( 引擎或機動車因動力或速力不足而)

                              熜火, 止轉動;失速

                   [vi] (2) infml  to delay in order to gain time, avoiding taking a decision, 

                              etc.; intentionally take no action  拖延(以爭取時間,推遲[(+off)];

                             故意敷衍行動              stall off  ()拖延

                        (3) infrml  to deal with by delaying; put off 搪塞;拖延

           (n) (1) (熄火,死火,停止轉動;(飛機的)失速

                 (2) [] (常構成複合詞) 攤位     stallholder (n) 攤主

    a bookstall / a fruitstall 書攤/ 水果攤

    Every time I ask her to set the date, she stalls. 

    The bad weather stalled our holiday plans

    The police are coming. Stall him for a moment

    We were stalled in the mud.

    An inexperienced pilot can easily stall his plane.

 沒有經驗的飛行員很容易使他的飛機失速

   The plane went into a stall.
