If thou survive my well-contented day,
此身迎大限，無憾滿足日，
When that churl Death my bones with dust shall cover,
死神無情使，屍骨覆塵時，
And shalt by fortune once more re-survey
若卿有幸在，品讀且再次，
These poor rude lines of thy deceased lover,
復讀孤陋句，舊愛所遺詩。

Compare them with the bettering of the time,
傑作時代出，與之若比試，
And though they be outstripp’d by every pen,
縱然落下風，不敵風流士，
Reserve them for my love, not for their rhyme,
望卿能珍存，字句有情思，
Exceeded by the height of happier men.
而非韻律巧，更巧有後世。

O then vouchsafe me but this loving thought:
望卿答允我，柔情賦此思：
"Had my friend’s Muse grown with this growing age
繆思從我朋，並進若與時，
A dearer birth than this his love had brought,
有情生新句，更勝昔日詞，
To march in ranks of better equipage:
闊步能比肩，文筆無愧是。

O, since so poor a sonnet’s my best skill,
窮我最精妙，獻醜於此詩，
Be pleased I leave it to thy better will."
