Dieprivier— First written in 2010, translated into English in 2026 — As the winds grew warmer and the days longer, winter slipped away without leaving so much as half a footprint—dissolving into the heat and fervour of the 2010 World Cup. Released from frost, the ice ran into streams. Downstream, the broad channel of the Dieprivier ran full, carrying winters gentlest farewell. After work, no hurry to go home. I wandered to the bridge, only a few miles from the door—only a few miles, yet here I stood. The lamps—pools of pale yellow slowly opening. Light shimmering across the ripples. Dusk stepping quietly into life. The afterglow, The bridge once led me across the Dieprivier to hear the breathing of the sea. Before the rolling surf I felt the pulse of the tides, the turning of sun and moon. Walking for miles along the level bank, I watched the river curve around the sandbars and enter the ocean. Standing by the water, the Master once sighed: It flows on like this, never ceasing, day or night. And I stood there, wordless, simply gazing at that river of spring water—that river of spring water. The bridge once led me across. The Dieprivier flows on. It leaves nothing behind; it carries nothing away. As though it had never come, never gone. The river flows while I simply gaze—gazing until I am the river, and the river is I. |
