National Health Care

My daughter told me the other day that the medical bill for her giving birth to my granddaughter, including the cost of an extra week for the baby detained in the hospital for observation , totalled $130 thousand.  Oh my goodness!  In America, Ive heard so many similar stories of catastrophic illness that have made a family go broke.  (Please also see my previous writing "What I learned from my $190,000 open-heart surgery" at http://blog.udn.com/kkuo0810/20184234 .)

Now is the tax season(or month) in Taiwan.  My wife and I will have a deductible of $2,000 combined for the national health insurance premium we paid during 2014.  The amount comprises $50 fixed payment per month and an extra 2% on our annual interest and dividend income.  Unlike those interest receivers who are trying to avoid the extra by splitting their principal into smaller accounts, I am more than happy to do the contribution.  I think such a pratice is one of the best performances of Ma administration has ever done, which will have made the national heath insurance sustainable in the future. (I heard the insurance had already gained surplus now.)

I like socialism.  To make the rich contribute more by strict but peaceful means, to help the very underpriviliged,  to create a suitable envorionment to encourage those in between work harder, and that will do it; most importantly, never to let any private enterprise become a juggernaut.  See, it is simple as that.
