Via his excellent penmanship, the author vividly illustrates the memories pertaining to his younger days with an old landlady in a four-unit housing complex at somewhere in Beijing.  The landlady is the bereaved widow, actually the second wife or the concubine, of Mr Liang Qichao, who is one of the most influential scholars in modern China. 

The author also indirectly captures how did Mrs Liang raise up all of her nine children and help them become the persons of great stature, like their father had been.
