Weekly gathering on November 28, 2016

Bob chaired the gathering and we studied the November Studio Classroom and Jenny presented “the life of a butterfly.”

Tom reminded the attendees of the Dec-5 outing about wearing suitable clothing. For Dec-12 class, we will sing the song “You raised me up,” so please practice in advance.

Bob: Let’s learn about English on page 14

The article refers to several things you do not usually learn in English class. English is one of the most common language and also the official language of the sky. It is closely related to German and many words from French. He listed 7 ways to pronounce the letters “ough.” People who use too many “crutch words” sound like they are not sure what they are trying to say.

Rosie: Apologize on page 20

How to apologize is an art. Below are some tips. Apologize in person if possible. Show that you feel remorse and understand how the other person feels. Do not make excuses. Commit to changing your behavior.

And we also discussed the difference between “I’m sorry” and “Excuse me.”

Andy: Parting company on page 18

Telling someone they no longer have a job is never easy. So managers should be trained to handle layoffs. And 2 layoff examples were mentioned. He also pointed out the different redundancy packages under the current laws, Labor Pension Act and Labor Standards act.

Jenny: The life of a butterfly

She displayed many beautiful butterfly photos which she took by herself in the areas of 二子坪步道，大屯山步道，絹絲瀑布步道 and興福寮農場.  Her presentation included: insect definition, complete metamorphosis (egg, caterpillar, pupa, and butterfly), 6 types of butterfly, protection mechanism (camouflage, poison, mimicry, and flying), etc.

Tammy: All about turkeys on page 46

While she was a child, she lived in countryside. Her family raised many turkeys but they were all gone on a dark, windy night.  We learned several fun facts about turkey.  A wild turkey might weigh nearly 17 kilograms but it isnot on the top 3 biggest bird: ostrich, cassowary and emu.
