Weekly gathering on October 17, 2016

Jenny chaired the gathering and we studied 3 articles of the magazine, Studio Classroom of October.  Before the regular session, 6 new members did the self-introduction.  And the Turmeric Party went on during our classes.

Welcome to 6 new members:

Mariam: retired last year from a customs broker firm.

Amer: retired one and half months ago as IT professional in a pharmaceutical company

Teresa: a yoga instructor and interested in Beitou cultures.

Sophia: retired last month from Citibank and willing to improve English proficiency.

Vicky: retired this June and got her English name from direct translation of her Chinese name.

Show: retired several months ago. Unlike other new members, she lives in Yong-he（永和）.

1.    Tammy: Prince Harry – the spare heir

First, she pointed out the different pronunciation of Harry: 哈利in UK while黑利in US.  Prince Harry was fifth in line to the throne, so he did not take most of the spotlight. After he retired from army, he spent much of his time supporting various charities. However, he was a party animal and the negative image won’t get away soon.

2.    Jenny: Turmeric and Its Benefits – Discover one of the world’s healthiest spices.

        She mentioned the health benefits of turmeric: heart diseases, digestion, and cancer. And it might reduce depression as well. Not only did she explain the text, but also she prepared roasted chicken wings and taro balls in which turmeric was added to.  All members were very happy to enjoy the delicious food.

3.    Andy: Up Front

        b) Weapons inspectors find Syria retains chemical weapons program

        c) Colombia, FARC rebels reach deal to end war.

He introduced the basic information of Colombia and briefed the text. Because of Colombian President Santos’ resolute efforts to end this war, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. However, Colombian voters did not ratify the accord on October 2.

4.    Little Jenny: Exercise

She passed the video yesterday, so we could practice in advance. The music was the theme of cartoon Monster Watch (妖怪手錶). Jenny led all members to dance and we had a happy and healthful ending.
