TAIWAN Famous traditional yangqin performer Chang Wen-Chen was born in 1948, Yunlin, Taiwan. He is a famous traditional yangqin performer, who devoted his life to repair and make Chinese traditional music instruments. His performance style is natural and unrestrained. His hammers look like flying and dancing, creating a fascinating music that sounds like pearls falling into the jade plate. Each fantastic note was noticed and kindly welcomed by listeners. Furthermore, Mr. Chang has the unique interpretation, he plays from his heart and the sound goes fluently like a river flows. Since Mr. Chang wanted to preserve traditional Taiwanese yangqin, make it more popular and acceptable to larger audiences, so in 1988 he started focusing on instrument’s improvement. The biggest contribution was a refine small yangqin’s tree bridges of equal temperament. Therefore, the modified yangqin was not only convenient to carry, but also suited to play for temples’ celebration and ball’s concerts. It solved the 402 Chinese big yangqin’s problem, which was too heavy to move. In 1997 and 1998, he was invited by Butterfly Music Studio to join play yangqin. In 1999 the chief yangqin performer of the National Music Ensemble Chen Shi-Yu’s invited Mr. Chang to take part in private yangqin concert. Later for more than ten years, he used the leisure time to form the communities’ music groups and promote the traditional yangqin music.
In 2000 he helped Mrs. Chan Chin-Niang, the yangqin teacher from National Taiwan College of Performing Arts, inquiring Taiwanese yangqin performers in order to do the research. The paper ontented information about Taiwanese yangqin from Ching dynasty to owadays. In 2001 Mr. Chang assisted her to finish the master thesis “The Research of Yangqin Performance in Taiwan”, which included 435pages of detailed information cataloging the development and transition of Taiwanese Yangqin. It is important to mention that this document is the first research paper about Taiwanese yangqin.Currently, Mr. Chang is editing the book “Taiwanese Cantonese Yangqin Music”. |
