去年12月的 TIME 雜誌, 有一篇 “Testing Netbooks”, 嘗試比較各家不同的筆記型電腦, 只是他們係由該雜誌員工自己親自出馬調查, “Along with a group of TIME staffers, I recently tested leading netbooks for ease of use, durability and comfort.” 所以他們用的標準(criteria) 是易於使用, 耐用及舒適。其實該篇文章頗主觀的, “We found that keyboard feel and trackpad design are what tend to distinguish one notebook from the next, given that the guts of the computers are remarkably similar.” 他們居然認為筆記型電腦內裝大同小異(句中guts係指主要零件), 而好壞重點在鍵盤及軌跡板(trackpad)。這真是見仁見智。 最近的發展十分特別, “Even as smart phones and TV screens get bigger, PCs are steadily shrinking. The latest low-cost laptops, dubbed netbooks because they're primarily for accessing the Internet, are lighter and cheaper than their bulkier laptop cousins.” 所以, 手機與電視銀幕走向寬大, 筆電卻在縮小化, 因為輕又便宜, 只要上網便可獲得消費者靑徠, “dubbed netbooks” 係指為具新聞性而創造出的新名稱, 可謂“網路電腦”。其實這種比較法是相當主觀的, 正如作者所寫“Depending on which features you value most, you might rank these differently.” 換句話說, 你如果選用不同的 criteria 結果自然迥異。 電腦已成為新時代的寵兒可說成The computer has come of age. (= has been widely used) The compact computer is great for people on the go. (=traveling from place to place), 有人旅行時電腦成了非常有用的秘書, 像作家, 藝術工作者, 編輯幾乎深深依賴電腦, Computers are fast becoming a way of life for writers, artists, editors, you name it. 所謂“you name it” 這兒指你想得到的任何人。有了筆記型電腦等於把辦公室的功能均放在妳的膝蓋上, The notebook computer is able to put the power of your office in your lap. 如要誇耀妳的最新型電腦可說 This new model computer is top of the line. (=the best) 對個人來說, 可以用電腦的拼字檢查免除拼錯字的尷尬, The spell check feature can eliminate many embarrassing errors. 對公司而言, 也可掌控存貨, With that computer inventory system, we can quickly and effectively replenish items that sell well. “replenish” 是指“restore” 重新進貨之意。“feature” 表示特色貨功能, 但也可用為 They saw double feature for the price of one movie. (他們用ㄧ場的票卻可看兩部電影, two movies back to back) 當電腦用了一段時間, 新型機種問世, 我們可能需升級, 可以用 My computer can be upgraded to a higher-performance model. 至於 My word processor conked out last night. 或是 My TV zonked out during the thunderstorm. “conked out” 與 “ zonked out” 均為突然壞掉之意。電腦駭客叫 hacker, 工會杯葛叫 boycott, 最近不是有一新名詞叫雲端技術? 其實也是舊瓶新酒, 不就是 All computers are linked to a main network 嗎？電腦輔助不僅有 computer-aided design 還有 computer-aided translation, 電腦程式(computer program)外還有電腦模式(computer modeling)及電腦模擬(computer simulation), 當然如果你不是computer-illiterate 就好了, 起碼你是懂電腦的(computer-literate)。
