| 戒貪詩
十六世紀英國戴爾爵士（Sir Edward Dyer, 1543-1607）的「戒貪詩」 "My Mind to me a Kingdom is" 我的心靈是我的王國 My mind to me a kingdom is;我的心靈是我的王國 Such present joys therein I find,我在其中獲得了愉快的獻禮 That it excels all other bliss它超過了所有其他至大幸福的收穫 That earth affords or grows by kind:窮盡大地的所賜和人類善良得到的利益 Though much I want that most would have,雖然我所想要的多半都能得到 Yet still my mind forbids to crave.但我的心仍禁止我去貪求那種需要 No princely pomp, no wealthy store,我不想華麗的場面以及滿倉的財富 No force to win the victory,也不想擁有能夠隨心所欲的獲勝權力 No wily wit to salve a sore,我不想有掩蓋爛瘡的詭詐奸巧之術 No shape to feed a loving eye;也不想虛偽裝扮來騙取別人的誠意 To none of these I yield as thrall;我不向任何人屈膝有如奴隸一般 For why? my mind doth serve for all.為了甚麼？我的心靈就可讓我變得滿滿 I see how plenty surfeits oft,我看到富足經常是如何的被搞成過度 And hasty climbers soon do fall;而忙著汲汲營營的人很快就摔了下來 I see that those which are aloft我看到那些人一度顯赫突出 Mishap doth threaten most of all:但他們大多數都深恐好運不再 They get with toil, they keep with fear:他們千方百計去獲得滿懷恐懼想保有 Such cares my mind could never bear.這種忐忑不安我的心可絕無這樣的時候 Content I live, this is my stay;滿意的過這一生 這就是我的信念 I seek no more than may suffice;我不想多過必需之外的東西 I press to bear no haughty sway;我要求自己不要有傲慢的貪求無厭 Look, what I lack my mind supplies.看啊我所匱乏的我心都可為之補齊 Lo, thus I triumph like a king,啊我因此一生凱旋有如君王 Content with that my mind doth bring.滿足於我的心所帶來的良好情況 Some have too much, yet still do crave;有些人得到太多卻依然還想再要 I little have, and seek no more.我有的很少卻不想要更多 They are but poor, though much they have,因而他們實屬貧窮儘管有的已很不少 And I am rich with little store;我則可稱富裕雖然並沒有甚麼 They poor, I rich; they beg, I give;他們窮我富；他們乞討我則付出 They lack, I leave; they pine, I live.他們匱乏我則剩下；他們憔悴而我幸福 I laugh not at another’s loss,我不嘲笑別人的失去 I grudge not at another’s gain;我不幸災樂禍對待別人的痛苦 No worldly waves my mind can toss;世俗的波濤搖不動我的思緒 My state at one doth still remain:我心堅定如一始終穩固 I fear no foe, I fawn no friend;我不畏懼敵人不諂媚朋友 I loathe not life, nor dread my end.我不憎惡生命也對死亡無所懷憂 Some weigh their pleasure by their lust,有些人用貪來評定他們的快樂 Their wisdom by their rage of will;也把他們意志的亢奮當做智慧 Their treasure is their only trust,他們只對珠寶財貨認可 A cloaked craft their store of skill;而他們技巧庫房裡有的只是欺騙詐偽 But all the pleasure that I find但在所有的快樂裡 Is to maintain a quiet mind.我找到的乃是讓自己的心靜謐 My wealth is health and perfect ease,我的財富是健康和徹底的自在 My conscience clear my chief defence;我的良心使得我不必為任何事辯護 I neither seek by bribes to please,我既不需要靠著賄賂以獲青睞 Nor by deceit to breed offence:也不必靠欺騙來進行詐誣 Thus do I live; thus will I die;我這樣活這樣死 Would all did so as well as I!所有的人能否和我一樣如是 |
