I read your articles from time to time and enjoyed them. They sometimes make me laugh since they come from someone who shares same language and cultural history ( not just those 60 years, I am talking about thousands of years of history baby) but, oh yeh, becasue of those 60 years, seeing things in Mainland China  from a unique and sometimes interesting perspective , and they amuse me a lot. Too bad I haven't been able to see an ORDERNARY Mainland Chinese who can consistently compose articles on things in Taiwan which I believe will make me even more grateful. For I am a firm believer of Taiwan and Mainland China being nice to each other and someday uniting as a one nation. It is unfortunately for the same reason that it always saddens me to see a lady who loves life, traveling, new things, freedom, human rights, democracy, speaks same language , has lived in Mainland China for some time and above all, happens to come from Taiwan Island, failed so badly to understand why 1.3 billion Chinese people, no matter where and how long they have lived, Mainland China, US, Canada, Europe, they will always support the current PRC goverment on national sovereignty issues. I, for some reasons, feel Republic of China does exist, in Taiwan Island only, which is a result of Chinese civil war, and hope the two governments and people on each side of Taiwan Strait will someday work their butts off to come up with a mutually acceptable and peaceful solution to reuniting the whole CHINA into one  nation that is demoratic, human right loving, prosperous, respectful, peaceful and whoes people are happy.

Mainland China, for all what you maight have seen in your eyes as a systemetically inferior society compared with what makes you feel so proud and superior living in Taiwan, is developing and evolving gradually, sometimes quickly, into a society that is more open, tolerant, accommodating and freeer than it was yesterday. You've got to believe it if you happend to know somebody you  trust and who has lived in this society more than 30 years, 40 years. It's a hugh and complicated society and nothing comes easily to any governments that want to govern it effectively and coutructively. Be it a demoractic or socialism government, the challenges facing it could be equally formidable. This govenment is doing its jobs, not always making people agreeable, but it is making the whole society work towards the relatively right direction. Can it become more demoratic and human right respecting?  You bet. But stay patient. Always remember this is a country that knows its own hishtroy all too well.

However demoractic or free a society Taiwan Island has become, or no matter how hard those who live on this island tried to distinct themselves as Taiwanese from Chinese, they are only the very few which 1.3 billion people will not agree with, no matter how these 1.3 billion people may or may not approve their government, dictator or not, they will always stand behind this government when it comes to national sovereignty. It has nothing to do with political system, or whatever government they have got. For these 1.3 billion know clearly from the fate of their farthers, grandfarthers and great grandfarthers, that they are what they are today  becasue they speak as a powerful and supposed-to-be-united nation, and this opens up all the possibilities and closes down every possibiliy without. Those western countries,  US, UK, Germany ------- they all insulted and harmed China even though they were all demoratic countries back then when they committed all those sins upon China. Demoracy is a good thing personally, but it does not always bear witness to all the good things if you happen to live in a poor, small or historically weak country. Don't know what I mean? Go spend time studying history, not just China's.

I am a CHINESE immigrant having been living in a western country for nearly 10 years. For some obvious reasons, I read UDN frequently and read some articles of yours. I care about what happens in Taiwan very much, bad or good.

One reason, is Taiwan(or Republic of China, so to speak) and Mainland China( or PRC ) belong to one CHINA, and they are to be united one way or the other, sooner or later, nothing will change this predictable ending. Why this has to be the only and unavoidable ending for both sides of the Taiwan Strait ? Go spend some time studying Chinese history,  it absoultely tells everyone who deems him/herself a Chinese, that it's the only choice they have got if they want to survive on this planent as a nation that won't repeat her fate of the past two centuries.
