有個人和他的兒子牽著他們的驢子要到市場去。他們走在驢子的旁邊，一個鄉下人經過說：「你們這兩個笨蛋！如果你們有驢子，為何不騎呢？」

所以，那個人把他的兒子放上驢子，繼續上路。不久，他們經過了一群人，當中有一個人說：「看那個懶惰的男孩！他竟讓他的父親走路，自己卻騎驢。」

所以，那個人命令他的兒子下來，然後他自己騎上驢子。他們只走了一小段路，就又遇到兩個婦人。其中一個婦人跟另一位婦人說：「這個懶惰的男人真可恥！這是什麼樣的父親？他自己騎驢，卻讓他可憐的小兒子走這麼遠的路，還累成這樣。」

那個人不知如何是好，最後他讓他兒子坐在他前面，一起騎驢。這時候，他們已經來到鎮上，所有經過的人都開始大叫並指著他們。那個人停下來問路人為何要斥責他們。群眾中有人說：「讓你這隻可憐的驢子超載，你和你那胖兒子，自己不覺得慚愧嗎？」

那個人和男孩都下驢，試圖想出該怎麼做。他們想了又想，最後他們砍了一段竿子，將驢子的腳綁在上面，舉起竿子，把這頭驢子扛在肩上走。他們沿路只聽到所有遇到的人發出的笑聲。當他們來到市場橋，被綁在竿子上的驢子想要掙脫，結果造成男孩那端的竿子掉落。在掙扎中，驢子掉下橋，因為牠的四隻腳被綁在一起，所以牠就淹死了。

一位跟在他們後面的老人說：「這件事給你們一個教訓：想要取悅所有人，你就取悅不到任何人。」
