BBC forced to apologise after George Michael swears live on Radio 2

By Claire Ellicott

Last updated at 1:39 AM on 17th December 2009

The BBC was forced to apologise last night after singer George Michael swore live on Radio 2.

DJ Chris Evans apologised for offending listeners after the controversial popstar used the F-word on his drive-time show.

Asked by a fan whether he would ever appear on Top Gear, in a feature in which celebrities race round a track, he replied: 'Other than the fact I'd be afraid of coming last on that f****** score board'.

Evans then jumped in and told him he couldn't swear on the show, to which George Michael replied that he thought the programme had a delay.

The former Wham singer then added 'I meant fecking'.

Later, he told listeners of the drive-time show he was co-hosting with Evans that he 'sincerely apologised', adding: 'I use that word far too readily... It's because I know you so well, Chris.'

At the end of the show - which is broadcast on weekdays between 5.05 and 7pm - Evans signed off with: 'Once again we apologise for some colourful language.'

A BBC spokesman said: 'In line with BBC policy, apologies were immediately made and both George and Chris apologised again later in the show.'

Pop star sorry for radio swearing

(UKPA) – 2 hours ago

Singer George Michael has apologised to Radio 2 listeners after swearing on Chris Evans' show.

The pair both said sorry immediately and issued further apologies later in the drivetime programme.

Michael spent the second hour of the show as a co-host with DJ Evans and the pair chatted about various topics between the music.

At one point the singer, who is a car fanatic, was asked why he has never appeared on Top Gear as the "star in a reasonably-priced car".

Believing there would be an automatic delay on his words, he replied: "Other than the fact I'd be afraid of coming last in that f****** ..."

Evans quickly interrupted to apologise, before informing Michael there was in fact no delay on the show. The DJ said: "George is so relaxed and we do apologise for that - we didn't mean to offend anyone."

"I'm sorry everyone," added Michael.

Later on in the show - which is broadcast on weekdays between 5.05pm and 7pm - Evans said sorry again while Michael said: "I sincerely apologise. I use that word far too readily," he added. "It's because I know you so well, Chris."

At the end of the programme, Evans signed off with: "Once again we apologise for some colourful language."

A BBC spokesman said: "In line with BBC policy, apologies were immediately made and both George and Chris apologised again later in the show."
