George Michael was yesterday told he could be sent to jail.(photo) The singer had admitted driving under the influence of cannabis for the second time in three years. Judge Robin McPhee immediately banned him from the road and said he could be jailed when he returns to court on September 14. He told the star: "I make it clear all options remain open including powers to imprison. It is a serious matter. Your driving was extremely poor and there was an accident." The 47-year-old was found slumped over the wheel of his Range Rover after ploughing into Snappy Snaps in Hampstead, North London, at 4am. When police woke him he said: "I haven't crashed into anything." Prosecutor Penny Fergusson said: "His pupils were dilated. He was dripping with sweat." Michael admitted smoking a "small quantity" of cannabis the previous evening and said he also took a newly-prescribed sleeping pill. He told police he drove between his neighbouring homes in Highgate and Hampstead on the spur of the moment to meet a friend and forgot he had taken the sedative. His barrister, Mukul Chawla QC, said his client was "clearly" unfit to drive and could not remember when he took the prescribed drug. He said this was no excuse for the offence. Michael, real name Georgios Panayiotou, appeared amid heavy security at Highbury Corner magistrates' court. Wearing a black suit and sweater, he spoke only to plead guilty and confirm his name, age and address. The former Wham! star, who has admitted cutting back from 25 joints a day to eight, could not remember his postcode and had to be helped by the court clerk. The public gallery was filled with fans who shouted "You're an inspiration" and "I love you". They begged for autographs as he left court. Michael made no comment as he was driven off in a black BMW. In May 2007 he pleaded guilty to driving while unfit through drugs and was banned for two years and sentenced to community service. The Careless Whisper singer was caught on CCTV mounting the kerb in his Ranger Rover and ploughing into Snappy Snaps in Hampstead, north London. Following the collision, the shocked former Wham! star climbed out of his 4x4 and waited for police to arrive. He was not breathalysed, insisting to officers he had not been drinking. But he is thought to have been tested for drugs at a north London police station, the Daily Mirror reported. No drugs were recovered and the 47-year-old star was released on bail until August. A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed: 'Police were called at approximately 3.30am on Sunday to reports of a vehicle in collision with a building. 'Officers attended and a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive. 'He was taken to a north London police station and later bailed to return on August 13 pending inquiries.'

Last year, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence when his Land Rover hit a lorry on the A34 in Berkshire. He had just completed a two-year driving ban at the time and was subsequently released without charge. Yesterday, the front of the photo shop still showed signs of damage, with the door frame window shattered and wooden panelling cracked. The shop is close to Hampstead Heath, where George was caught having sex three years ago. It is also near to his Highgate home.
