What would you do if you were given $100,000? This is one of the stories reported by Oprah today. I find it really interesting. Ted, a homeless for almost 20 years, was given $100,000 by a documentary filmmaker Wayne Powers. "I thought to myself, 'What would happen if I actually was able to give someone $100,000 and the free will to do with it what they wanted to do?'" he says. "Would that turn their life around or would it create more problems?" said Powers. This is what Ted chose to do with his free $100,000: A truck for himself (WHAT THE HELL does a homeless need a truck for? A truck ain't run with AIR!) A car for his friend (PRIORITY, PRIORITY, PRIORITY!) Paid off friends' debts (rationale, please see above...) Got his teeth fixed (hmmm...) A wife/ marriage (this proves again that SOME women would consider sleeping with a homeless dude if he has $100,000. Ted's still married but his newly wife run away once he run out of cash.) A mastercard and some debts (YES, he owes MORE money now than he did before.) "I thought it would erase all my problems. I thought I would never be homeless again," said Ted. " You never think...the money's going to run out sooner or later." Ted admited at the national broadcasting TV show that his "couple of bad choices" made him end up going back to the streets again. (YES, he is homeless AGAIN.) What were the opportunities that Ted has passed by? Various job offers, homeless advocate counselling, and financial advices that he was offered. "I learned that in providing somebody with the necessities to be able to turn their life around, a car, a telephone, a roof above their head, a driver's license, all the things that we hear is what somebody needs to be able to turn their life around, it still, unfortunately, in this particular case, was not enough," said Powers. Like my mom used to say, " A bull taken to Beijin is still a bull." |
