英文十課Plus (5) 詞彙學習(上)

NOTE: The content of this lesson is from a high school student's Speech class notes.

Let’s learn a List of More than 200 Words that can describe feelings!

When sharing feeling, you can do more effectively by describing feeling precisely in addition to displaying them accurately. Describing feelings is the skill of explaining emotions one feels in a precise and unemotional manner.

Describing feelings is a three-step process:

  1. Identify what has triggered the feelings ( a trigger is anything that causes a feeling or reaction)

  2. Identify the particular emotion you are
experience accurately- this sounds easier than it sometimes is. The
following tables provide vocabulary of emotions to help you develop your
    ability to identify specific feelings.

  3. Use an “I” statement to own, rather than project, the feeling.

Examples:

“Thank you for your compliment [trigger]; I [owning the feeling] feel gratified [specific feeling] that you noticed the effort I made.”

“When you criticize my cooking on days that I’ve worked as many hours as your have [trigger], I [owning the feeling] feel very resentful [specific feeling].”

If you are new to describing feeling, practice your skills by describing positive feelings: “I would like you to know, taking me to that movie really cheered me up” or “When you offered to help me with my science project, I really felt relieved.” As you become more comfortable describing your positive feelings, you can try describing negative feelings attributable to environmental factors:” It’s so cloudy; I feel gloomy” or “When we have a thunderstorm, I get really anxious.” Finally, you can move to negative description resulting from what people have said or done to you:’ When you step in front of me like that, I really get annoyed” or when you use a negative tone of voice while saying that what I did pleased you, I really fell confused.”

All that you achieve and all that you fail to achieve is the direct result of your own thoughts.~ James Allen

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you'll find one at the end of your arm. . . As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others. ~ Audrey Hepburn
