那再見了!

不清不楚,沒關係,繼續有耐心的看下去。

首先先介紹句子的定義。

句子 Sentence 基本上是由一組有主詞、述詞所組成的字群,藉以表達一個完整的想法。Sentences are groups
of words that express a complete thought.

  • A basic sentence is composed of a
    noun名詞 (subject主詞) and
    a verb 動詞(predicate述詞).
  • To find the subject of a sentence, ask “Who?” or “What?” before the verb.找句子內的主詞,就是問個"誰啊"或"什麼啊"。
  • The predicate tells something about the subject.述詞就是 "Who誰"、"what是什麼" 或做什麼中的是與做,再加上一大堆字來形容是與做。是與做是動詞。

英文四大句子結構分為: 簡單句,合句, 複句, 複合句。

1. 簡單句 Simple Sentence (A, B, & C)

A:  基本原則

Basic:

A simple sentence is made up of a one subject and one
predicate
.

Advanced:

A simple sentence has one independent clause and no subordinate
clauses.

 · A clause (子句)is a group of words that contains a verb and its  subject and is used as part of
a sentence. 子句也有主詞與動詞,但只是全句的一部分。

範例Examples: 一個一個來解解,用顏色區分。

Fish swim.

Girls run.

The boys  played basketball.

The boys  played basketball against the girls' team.

The boys from Happy Elementary School played basketball against the Smart Elementary School girls' team.

There is a trap.

Here is your water.

B: 簡單句變化題

找主詞、述詞。Can you identify the subject and the predicate?

  • Pay attention to your teacher.
  • David, please explain this story’s ending.
  • Piles of rotten garbage stood before them.
  • In the trash hid rats.

解答Answers:

[You] Pay attention to your teacher. [Who is to pay attention? You are.]

David, [you] please explain this story’s ending. [David needs to explain the story’s ending. Lucky David!Hello, David! Is David taking a nap? Hello, Hello...]

Piles of rotten garbage stood before them. [What stood? Piles stood, not garbage, which is the object of the preposition of.]

In the trash hid rats. [What hid? Rats hid. Trash is the object of the preposition in.]

C: 挑戰區

More Simple Sentence Structure examples:

Quote from Daisy Miller by Henry James (This is a simple sentence with a compound predicate. See  Wikipedia)

Poor Winterbourne was amused, perplexed, and decidedly charmed.

He had dined with his aunt, had been sitting with her since dinner, and had just taken leave of her till the morrow.

Quote from Frankenstein by Mary Shelly (Here, the subject is highlighted. Will you be able to identify the predicate?)

As a child, I had not been content with the results promised by the modern professors of natural science.

Quote from London Short Stories by Jack London (Here, you have a compound subject that is joined by a conjunction and have the compound predicate. A compound predicate consists of two or more verbs that are jointed by a conjunction and have the same subject.)

The two men and the woman grouped about the fire and began their meager meal.

Quote from Emma by Jane Austen

Mr. Knightly, a sensible man about seven or eight-and-thirty, was not only a vary old and intimate friend of the family, but particularly connected with it as the elder brother of Isabella’s husband.

(Did you notice the “not only/but also” usage? The “also” was omitted in this sentence.)

Quote from The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren (Please identify all verbs. This is an excellent example of using action verbs to make a powerful statement.)

God’s Word generates life, creates faith, produces change, frightens the Devil, causes miracles, heals hurts, transforms circumstances, imparts joy, overcomes adversity, defeats temptation, infuses hope, releases power, cleanses our minds, brings things into being, and guarantees our future forever! (p.186)
