什麼是 Cool? 什麼是 Cool Jazz?

“Cool” 是1950年代興起的一種風格, 其影響及於藝術, 音樂, 電影, 建築, 設計, 和大眾文化. “Cool Jazz” 和傳統的jazz相較, 不像後者那麼熱情洋溢, 而是比較柔和 (mellow), 比較悠閒 (laid-back).

號稱 Birth of the Cool 的這張 CD 的歌曲雖然錄於 1949-1950 年, 其實是 1957 年才發行, 當時 cool jazz 已經過了高峰期. 與其把 Miles Davis 當作 cool jazz 的創始者, 不如注意樂團裡的兩個白人: Gerry Mulligan 和 Al Haig. 1952 年 6 月, Chet Baker 參加了在 Los Angeles 的 The Haig 俱樂部客串演出的 Gerry Mulligan Quartet. 這個沒有鋼琴的四人樂團 (Gerry Mulligan, baritone saxophone; Chet Baker, trumpet; Bob Whitlock, bass; Chico Hamilton, drums)的成立才正式宣告了 cool jazz 的誕生.

當年 Chet 23 歲.

為什麼不用鋼琴? 當時在 The Haig 駐店演出的三人樂團的主要樂器是 vibraphone (vibes), 因此不用鋼琴. The Haig 店面太小, 既然主團不用鋼琴, 店主就跟 Mulligan 情商是否可以把鋼琴收起來. 碰巧 Mulligan 對他自己的樂團有一個很特別的想法, 也就同意了. Mulligan 的理論是:

“I consider the string bass to be the basis of the sound of the group; the foundations on which the soloist builds his line, the main thread around which the two horns weave their contrapuntal interplay. It is possible with two voices to imply the sound of or impart the feeling of any chord or series of chords, as Bach shows us so thoroughly and enjoyably in his inventions. When a piano is used in a group it necessarily plays the dominant role … The soloist is forced to adapt his line to the changes and alterations made by the pianist in the chords of the progression.”

事實證明, 鋼琴的不存在使得 Mulligan 的 baritone saxophone 和 Baker 的 trumpet 兩隻號角吹出來的樂曲像雙螺旋練, 不, 像兩條金蛇纏鬥般地交織起舞而創造出美妙的音樂. <老殘遊記>中寫白妞說書神乎其技, 有這樣一段描述:

“那王小玉唱到極高的三四疊後，陡然一落，又極力騁其千迴百折的精神，如一條飛蛇在黃山三十六峰半中腰裡盤旋穿插。頃刻之間，周匝數遍。”

聽 Mulligan 和 Baker 的 My Funny Valentine 便有這種感覺的加倍. 加倍, 因為這裡有兩條飛蛇!

Gerry Mulligan Quartet 維持不到一年, 就因 Mulligan 吸毒入獄而解散. Chet 順勢而起, 贏得了 Down Beat 排名第一喇叭手的地位. 1955年, Chet 組了 Chet Baker Quartet 到歐洲巡迴演出, 在巴黎錄了很多令人沉醉的曲子, 成就了有名的 Barclay Sessions, 這張CD只是選輯. 錄音過程中, 鋼琴手 Dick Twardzik 吸毒死在旅館房間裡; 一位才華洋溢的青年音樂家, 留下了幾首不朽的伴奏曲就殞落了. 這也預告了Chet日後的命運吧?

Chet 的自傳書名 As Though I Had Wings, 但他卻常演奏一首 Broken Wing. 我常覺得 Chet 不是這個世界的人. 他有天使般的相貌和溫馴, 卻沒有社會觀念, 不但拋家棄子, 即在圈內亦不重然諾, 常令事業夥伴氣結. 他仗著天分追求物慾, 有“天生我才必有用, 千金散盡還復來”的酷勁. 我想他是 jazz 界的謫仙, 是墮落的天使. 他吸毒, 莫非是前世因緣, 使他沉緬於那種飛翔的恍惚中, 不能自拔? 然而他畢竟活在凡塵裡, 為道德和法律所困. 演奏 Broken Wing, 是在表達他的無奈吧?

1987年 Bruce Weber 幫他拍攝了紀錄片 Let’s Get Lost, 並有原聲帶發行. Chet 在片中是那麼的衰老! 片子終了時他瞇著滿是皺紋的眼臉唱著 “/Almost you /Almost me/Almost blue…,” 哀戚婉轉, 有如在唱自己的輓歌.

1988年4月28日在德國 Hanover 演出最後一場音樂會. 他的音聲容貌, 可以用兩個同樣的字來形容: 蒼涼. 那首 My Funny Valentine 依舊迴腸盪氣, 但加上了蒼涼滋味, 聽來令人不禁心酸落淚. 5月13日, Chet 在 Amsterdam 旅次自旅館窗臺摔落, 死於海洛因及古柯鹼使用過度, 得年58歳.
