Some 1,200 students and faculty had signed petitions asking the university president, former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey, to rescind his invitation for McCain to speak, saying McCain's support for the Iraq war and opposition to gay rights and abortion were not in keeping with the prevailing views on campus.

對台灣一向友好的John McCain亦是美國兩千年總統大選與小布希角逐共和黨總統提名最強勁的對手。出自軍事世家，先祖John Sidney McCain, Sr.曾隨侍華盛頓，美國開國至今的每一場戰役，其家族可說是無役不與，而祖父與父親John Sidney McCain, Jr.都是海軍四星上將，更是美國開國以來無人能及的記錄。
John McCain生於 1936 年，1958 年畢業於美國海軍官校，加入海軍飛行員的行列。1967年越戰期間，在一次轟炸任務中墜機被俘，自此開始了五年半POW的戰俘生涯。1973 年，越戰結束，John McCain與其他六百多名美國戰俘一同獲釋，繼續在海軍服役。1982年，首度參選眾議員，步上從政之路，1986 年正式退役並當選三任參議員迄今。現與第二任妻子定居亞利桑那州鳳凰城。
