《12 號公路女孩》是加拿大作家 Miriam Toews 所著。曾獲 Governor General's Award 獎，並得到 Giller Prize 提名。在加拿大的暢銷書排行榜上長達一年。作者本身出生於門諾教派的家庭，據說這個故事裡的小鎮其實就是以Miriam Toews 的家鄉 Steinbach, Manitoba 為藍本。

本書原名 A Complicated Kindness 然而關於仁慈恐怕書中描寫得太過複雜，複雜到看不出仁慈之所在。相反的，我看到的是殘酷。從封面的圖案讀者就已經可以預見這是一本極其殘酷的書。

那高舉的斧頭對準的是一隻無反抗能力的雞。本書的主角諾蜜就像那隻雞一樣等著斧頭隨時從空中揮下。

住在一個封閉的門諾社區，少女諾蜜的生活沒有喜樂、沒有歡笑。不人道的教條、違反人性的規矩讓此地的居民覺得生活就是受苦，而死亡是他們唯一解脫之道。諾蜜的姊姊和媽媽因為受不了這裡的生活而離開，留下才剛步入青春期的諾蜜。諾蜜在失去親人痛苦與唯恐違反教義的恐懼下過著痛苦萬分的生活。於是她逃避到毒品及男友的懷裡。

雖然書中沒有殺人魔、沒有謀殺，死亡的陰影卻隨處可見，少女的靈魂在抑鬱的灰暗世界等著被提領(門諾教派對於死亡的說法)。

讀此書，整個人的心靈隨著少女諾蜜的內心掙扎而痛楚。腦中縈繞著少女的悲鳴。這是一本我放下後就不忍再拿起的書。
