Ever notice how some people seem to level up in life almost effortlessly, while others stay stuck no matter how hard they try? More often than not, the answer has less to do with talent and more to do with company. The truth is, we absorb the energy, mindset, and habits of the people closest to us — quietly, gradually, and almost without realizing it. This is what the Five Chairs Principle is all about. Think of your life as having five chairs, each one reserved for a different kind of influence. Theres usually someone who inspires you — someone whose drive or vision pushes you to think bigger. Then theres the person who challenges you, who isnt afraid to call out your excuses and ask you to do better. Another chair belongs to a steady supporter, someone who simply shows up for you without conditions. But theres almost always a fourth or fifth chair occupied by someone who, intentionally or not, keeps you small — through negativity, distraction, or comfort that stops you from growing. Thats the real reason two people with similar dreams can end up in completely different places. Its rarely about who worked harder. Its about who they let influence them.
