I've paid lesser and lesser attention towards college entrance test because it has nothing to do with any member of my family.  But it interests me when I read a critic on Chinese test this year from today's UDN, commenting that the contents of the drills have become "simplified, confined and fast-food-styled".  I didn't need to finish reading the critic over before I realized what'd happened.

Except essay writing with a funny topic "The pleasant world", the test was comprised of materials out of limited sphere(almost no classic literature) and narrow genre(participants only had to pick correct answer from choices).  With this kind of education on Chinese, how can we expect our future pillars of society to possess logical thinking, analytic reasoning, humanity training and good taste of literature savoring?  The critic also compared the difference of Chinese test in college entrance examination, and argued the test in Mainland China is much tougher than that in Taiwan.  You can easily discern the difference if you notice the dialogs of ordinary people interviewed by TV reporters:  the term and the expression people in Taiwan used are pretty meagre, while the mainlanders used are relatively abundant.

What'd happened to Chinese teaching and whom to blame?  Obviously the de-China movement had been the root cause and Lee and Chen were the persons being responsible.  Do you remember the minister of education in DPP administration obstinately stuck to a lame excuse that "三隻小豬" is a Chinese idiom?  The minister had known much better than anybody else that it is not, still he perversely defended his viewpoint.  Why?  Because he intended to demolish all things related to traditional China, including Chinese idioms.

Mr. Ma, your insisting on using traditional type of Chinese character, instead of simplified one, for the vistors and tourists from Mainland is praiseworthy.  But please bear in mind that it is not important what kind of character type we are using, it is the contents of the language and words that really matter, which serves the vehicle to carry our culture.  I've said many times before that the only way for Taiwan to survive is to compete with Mainland China for the dominance of Chinese culture.  Again, don't be silly trying to "create" a Taiwanese culture.
