Mr. Ma, Ms. Lung, do you really know what culture is?

I don't know why Ma administration wants to establish a Ministry of Culture. I think he is trying to develop so-called "Taiwanese Culture" by virtue of investing on the industry of "cultural" creation.  But I can tell you, Mr. Ma and Ms. Lung, it's a mission impossibe, a lost cause.

Why is that?  Culture is the reflection of a nation's collective  remembrance expressed in various aspects: art, thinking, belief, ways of doing things, etc.  The more accumulation of historical events a nation has had, the more delicate and abundant its culture will be.  Now you know the root cause why not Taiwan is able to develop the industry of cultural creation, for culture can not be created, it's the formation through gradual evolution.  The problem thus lies here: Taiwan has only sixty-three years' history of its own after 1949, provided the majority of islanders cut their umbilical cords with Mainland China.  Taiwan has disregarded the brilliant, magnificient history of previous three thousands years at least, what else does it boast of?  If the administration still hews to the de-China policy left by Lee  and Chen, intead of vying with the Mainland for the leadership of Chinese culture, Taiwan will be soon out of world stage, because culturally Chinese is the last resort for Taiwan's survival.

You may say even the mainladers praise people in Taiwan to the skies: people here are polite, warm, helpful, considerate etc.. (Maybe those are backhanded compliments.)  Okay, they are earnest, so what?  At best we're more civilized than they are, but civilization is quite different from culture.  Do we delve into highly symbolic and elegant "kun-qu", not boast of that vulgar "dian-yin-san-tai-zih" instead?  You may also say that the Hollywood culture of United States and that funny Korean PSY are dominant.  You are wrong again, for those are just pop and fad, not culture.  So be sober, you just can't create a Taiwanese culture in kind.
