A Prediction on 2016 Summer Olympic

In an editorial, World Journal, United Daily U.S. Edition, predicted that China will be number one on the standings both in gold medals and total medals acquired at 2016 Rio Olympic. The editor didn’t explain why, but I think he is probably right.

In view of Olympic history, the number of medals a country gained was propotional to its synthetic national power, especially economic power. By 2016, China would emulate, if not surpass, the U.S. in GDP. That means China will have more money to “invest” in her medal campaign, fortifying the established items like badminton, table tennis, diving etc., while competing vigorously in the items abundant of medals like truck and field, swimming, and tapping into the new area like fencing, cycling or even equestrian. In other words, China will expand her “investment” across the board, for she is rich enough to do so.

More importantly, China has the will to power to be the number one. China athletes have proved themselves to the world that they boast of skill, technique, stamina and even strength(like in weightlifting) to compete with any other players, but not good enough in impulse and spring as that of Africans and Caucasians. However, China possesses a huge population, she can cheery-pick the talented athletes of sprinters and jumpers not to hard as long as she is willing to do it. Will she do it? I bet she will.

Let’s wait and see how it will happen in 2016. For Taiwan, by the time stupid political invectives will still dominate, GDP growth still stagnates or even regresses. Will to power to win? What a joke!
