Not long ago, in an extracurricular activity, my granddaughter was assigned to play the solo role of Patrick Henry, who in 1775 delivered those immortal words: Give me liberty, or give me death. In 1776, a year later, those inhabitants of Europe declared independence from Britain. (Americans pay much attention to patriotic education, not in dogmatic ways, on many occasions.)
