The other day my brother-in-law got his fourth grandchild, a healthy baby girl. Now he has had four grandchildren, two boys and two girls, from his two sons. It is a perfect combination, isnt it? But when I came to congratuate him, he said he wished all of his grandchildren be boys, and he even hoped one of his daughter-in-laws could further give him another grandson. Well, I felt a little embarrassed on the spot, for I did not know how to continue our conversation on the topic. He is a relatively successful businessman, from every conventional aspect. I guess most of the wealthy men in Taiwan all harbor a mindset that they could have as many male heirs as possible, even they have to take concubines. For some extreme cases I know, daughters of wealthy family can enjoy anything but inheritance from their parents, regardless of the legal right that the civil law otherwise stipulates. Think of that billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, the FACEBOOK founder. I guess he does not mind having only one daughter so far, does he? |
