China Mainland ordered to shut down the US consulate general in Chengdu as an equivalent reprisal against her consulate general in Houston was irrationally and rudely ordered to close by Trump administration the other day. Now Chengdu has stolen the limelight from the rest of the world! In reaction to the news, a citizen of Chengdu let off some firecrackers in front of the consulate as a traditional way of celebration as getting rid of the god of plague. That guy was taken away by police on the spot, and he might be reprimanded symbolically later, I guess. I have been Chengdu once, a city full of heritage, leisure, and ambrosia, let alone the home of panda and the gateway to Xizang. (A friend of mine told me that I can walk in any restaurant in Chengdu, he meant any, to enjoy a helping of delicacy. He is right.) How I wish I could spend the rest of my life in a place like Chengdu. PS Ms Zhuang Zuyi(莊祖宜), a Chinese American from Taiwan and also the wife of former US cousulate general in Chengdu, wrote in her Twitter or Facebook that she felt her leaving Chengdu now was something like those Jews running away from Nazis during WWII. I beg to differ, Ms Zhuang, what an improper simile you were implying! |
