GrandsonLet’s take a break.
GrandpaI’m old. Even the rehearsal made me tired.
Grandpa: Remember what I taught you.  Grandson: I’ll try my best.
LucyExcuse me! Is this a theater? It looks like a temple or a palace.

Puppeteer Grandson: Yes! It’s a puppet theater. Grandson wiped his face with a towel.

LucyBut, the structure is so different from that of my country. It’s more colorful, more elaborate, but smaller.

Puppeteer Grandson: Smaller?! I think it’s as big as the universe. Any intriguing story may happen on this stage.  By the way, I’m Patrick. What’s your name and what are you looking for?

Lucy: I’m Lucy. I am a French stage designer and I have come here to search for innovative ideas for my creation.

Puppeteer Grandson: Hey, grandpa, this is Lucy.   Lucy, this is my grandpa.

Puppeteer Grandpa: Nice to meet you.

Lucy: Grandpa? It seems that you are from a performing family, just like Michael Jackson’s family.
Puppeteer Grandson: Yes, we are.
Lucy to Grandpa: Are those the puppets that you perform with? They have different faces. Puppeteer Grandpa (gives the puppet to Lucy): You are smart. Actually, you can tell what role the puppet plays from the head.
Lucy: I don’t get it!
P
uppeteer Grandpa: Look! Like this red-faced puppet, he is a loyal and virtuous warrior. Puppeteer Grandson: And this one is a clown. He is playful and humorous.
Lucy: It sounds interesting.
Puppeteer Grandson: Oh! It’s our lunch time. So, take your time and look around.

Scene III

(A cosplayer stands beside the puppets,下北管音樂, cosplayer becomes alive.

Lucystartled):It can move? It can even dance!  But? It is a puppet?

Lucy: Hello! Are you a puppet?

Cosplayer:(走位到Lucy面前)Yes! Originally, I was just a piece of ordinary wood far away in the mountains.

It was those puppeteers that brought me to life. Due to their skillful manipulation, I can move and even dance like a real person.

Lucy: You are so handsome and well-dressed, looking like an exquisite artwork. Can I take a picture with you?
Cosplayer: Sure!

Lucy: Can I touch you?Lucy pulls the cosplayer’s clothes.

Cosplayer: Hey! Be careful. It costs a lot.
Lucy: Oh! I see. Can I play with your sword?

Cosplayer: Play? No! It’s my weapon, not a toy.
Lucy: Sorry!

Cosplayer: Shu~ here come my masters.

Scene III

Lucy: May I ask you someting?

Grandson: Shoot!
Lucy: Why did your great great grandfather create the hand puppet and perform in public?

Puppeteer Grandpa: In our times, it was performed mainly in religious ritual to show people’s gratitude and respect to the gods. It was even used as a means to make government orders and policies public.

Puppeteer Grandson: But, nowadays it’s more entertaining than educational. To attract more young people to enjoy our shows, more advanced special effects are added.

Puppeteer Grandpa: Advanced? I don’t think so. It totally ruins our traditional arts. It becomes nothing but a ridiculous play.

Puppeteer Grandson: Ridiculous? You should be more open-minded.  And it’s a good way to make young people get involved in our traditions.
Puppeteer Grandpa: Tradition is tradition.

Lucy: The conflict between old and new cultural value is inevitable.

Lucy: (Rap)                           Add new elements, but keep the old;

                                               Those are silver, these are gold.

                                               New-added elements, like new wine,
                                              Age will mellow and refine.

Grandson & Grandpa:         New is good, but Old is best;
                                             Add new elements, but keep the old;
                                             Those are silver, these are gold.
Lucy: Hey! I have a good idea. Can you teach me Taiwanese Puppetry?
Puppeteer Grandpa: But it’s not an easy job!
Puppeteer Grandson: Let her try it.
Puppeteer Grandpa: Ok. I should be “open-minded.”   Lucy: Really? Thank you.   Grandpa: Come on!
Grandson, Grandpa, Lucy walk behind the stage of the Puppet Theater and perform the show together.
Lucy(旁白): Ladies and gentlemen, today’s show is “A Beauty and Warriors.”
