Definition: the process of giving freedom and rights to someone

Example: the emancipation of slaves

Definition: very unpleasant and shocking

Example: The conditions in the camps were absolutely appalling.

Definition: a lot of things all happening or arriving at the same time, especially if they are hard to deal with

Example: The company received a deluge of complaints about the defective product.

 

l   vehement/ˈviːəmənt/

Definition: involving extremely strong feelings or beliefs

Example: a vehement protest/objection/denial

Definition: at the back of something

Example: Keep your front and rear lights in good working order.

Definition1: strange because of being the opposite of what you expect

Definition: used for saying that although someone pretends to have one reason for something, there is in fact another reason

Example: He was ostensibly on holiday, but actually he was on a diplomatic mission.

Definition: showing that you have a bad opinion of something or someone, usually in an insulting way

Example: a derogatory remark

Definition: to agree with someone or something

Definition1: a long narrow piece of coloured cloth or paper, usually used as a decoration or to tie something

Example: a box of chocolates tied with gold ribbon

Definition2: something with a long narrow flat shape

Example: The river appeared as a ribbon of blue between the mountains.

Definition: if two things are interchangeable, you can put each one of them in the place where the other was, or you can use one instead of the other, and the effect will be the same

Example: The terms 'thesis' and 'dissertation' were at one time interchangeable.

Definition: to speak quickly in a way that other people cannot understand easily

Example: He was babbling something about his mother.

Definition1: to kill someone in a violent way

Example: He was slain in battle in 673.

Definition2: to impress someone, especially by making them laugh

Example: His jokes really slay me.

Definition: to spread through the whole of something and become a very obvious feature of it

Example: A strange sour smell pervaded the air.

l   lament/ləˈment/

Definition: to show publicly that you feel sad or disappointed about something

Example: Some older people lament the loss of close local communities.

 

l   emulate/ˈemjʊleɪt/

Definition: to try to be like someone or something else, usually because you admire them

Example: a legal system that has been emulated all over the world

 

l   vice /vaɪs/ 

Definition: a bad habit or personal quality

Example: He has the occasional cigarette but that's his only real vice.
