Definition: something that is damp is slightly wet, often in an unpleasant way or when it should be dry

Example: The wood won't burn if it's damp.

Definition: morally wrong

Example: perverted political views

Definition: unkind and showing a strong feeling of wanting to hurt someone

Example: malicious gossip/rumors

Definition: very great anger

Example: He feared the wrath of his employer.

 

l   adamant/ˈædəmənt/

Definition: determined not to change your belief or decision about something

Example: We tried to persuade her but she was adamant.

 

l   fob /fɒb/

Definition1: to give someone an answer or explanation that is not true or complete, in order to make them stop asking questions or complaining

Example: I'm tired of being fobbed off.

Definition2: to give someone something that is not what they want or need

Example: Customers complain they're being fobbed off with an inferior model.

 

l   escort/ˈeskɔː(r)t/

Definition: a person or a group of people, vehicles, ships etc that go somewhere with another person, vehicle, ship etc in order to protect them or to prevent them from escaping

Example: You should not visit the area without an escort.

 

l   diverse /daɪˈvɜː(r)s/

Definition: very different from each other

Example: The newspaper aims to cover a diverse range of issues.

 

l   coincide/ˌkəʊɪnˈsaɪd/ 

Definition: to happen at the same time as something else

Example: The arrivals of the boat and the train are supposed to coincide.

Definition1: to break something suddenly into a lot of small pieces

Example: The blast shattered windows over a wide area.

Definition2: to destroy or seriously damage something

Example: The war has shattered this country's economy.

Definition: not ashamed or embarrassed

Example: She watched me with unabashed interest while I ate.

 

l   oblivion/əˈblɪviən/

Definition1: a situation in which someone or something has been completely forgotten

Example: a Hollywood star who has gradually faded into oblivion

Definition2: a state in which you do not notice what is happening around you, usually because you are sleeping or very drunk

Example: Drinking himself into oblivion won't solve any of his problems.

Definition: something that encourages someone to do something

Example: The news was a spur to the government to cut income tax.

 

l   summon /ˈsʌmən/

Definition1: to officially order someone to come to a place, especially a court of law

Example: He was urgently summoned to Washington for consultations.

Definition2: to manage to produce a quality or a reaction that helps you to deal with a difficult situation

Example: He couldn't summon the strength to carry on fighting.

Definition3: to arrange a formal meeting and tell people to come to it

Example: The official receiver summoned a meeting of creditors.

Definition: to fill someone or something with a particular quality or emotion

Example: His voice was imbued with a seriousness that Blanche had never heard before.

 

l   permeate /ˈpɜː(r)mieɪt/

Definition1: if an attitude or feeling permeates something, you can feel or see its influence clearly in every part of that thing

Example: A sense of deep loss permeates Frost's poetry.

Definition2: if gas, liquid, or a smell permeates something, it spreads into and through every part of it

Example: The unpleasant odour permeated every room.

 

l   extravagant /ɪkˈstrævəɡənt/

Definition1: spending or costing a lot of money, especially more than is reasonable

Example: It would be too extravagant to go by taxi.

Definition2: extreme, unusual, or unreasonable

Example: He made extravagant claims on his son's behalf.

 

l   conspicuous/kənˈspɪkjʊəs/

Definition: very noticeable or easy to see, especially because of being unusual or different

Example: She might have felt less conspicuous if there had been other women there too.

 

l   turbulent/ˈtɜː(r)bjʊlənt/

Definition: a turbulent situation, place, or period is one in which there is a lot of uncontrolled change

Example: the country's turbulent history

Definition: to give your support to an idea, principle, or belief

Example: the policies espoused by the government of Japan

Definition: belonging to or typical of the highest social class

Example: a patrician gesture/manner/face

Definition: the act of harming or killing someone because they have done something bad to you

Example: Both sides were locked in a cycle of violence and vengeance.

l   prelude/ˈpreljuːd/

Definition: an event that happens before and introduces a more important event

Example: The deal is a prelude to a merger of the two companies.

 

l   reprisal/rɪˈpraɪz(ə)l/

Definition: something unpleasant that is done to punish an enemy or opponent because of something bad that they have done to you

Example: The Foreign Office is concerned about possible reprisals against British civilians.

 

l   elapse /ɪˈlæps/

Definition: if time elapses, it passes

Example: Another hour elapsed and still the wind continued to howl.
