generic 這個字乍看之下和 "genetic" (基因的) 只差了一個字母 "r" 和 "t"，但是查一查字源發現：

generic，拉丁字源 "genus" "gener-"，和 "種類" (kind) 有關 。

genetic，希臘字源 "genesis"，和 "原始" (origin) 有關。

再看 genus 和 genius (天才) 也是一個字母 i 之差，可是字源與前例一樣的，genus 表示生物的 "屬" 類，例如Yahoo字典的例句就是：
