The Houthi advance in Yemen raises concerns about a key shipping choke point. The capture of the Red Sea port of Mokha and a strategic island by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen brings their forces to the heart of a key choke point for the global economy: the Bab el-Mandeb Strait leading out of the Red Sea.
The Houthis took Mokha on Thursday and on Friday captured Mayun, also known as Perim, off Yemen’s coast, two officials said, in a swift advance that extends their reach near one of the world’s key commercial lanes.
The strait had been a vital route for crude oil supplies from Saudi Arabia to Asia after shipping through the Strait of Hormuz was restricted due to threat of Iranian attack — until Houthi targeting of Saudi tankers largely ended that safety valve.
The Houthi advance is focusing renewed attention on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and further risks to shipping there, despite efforts by the Houthis to reassure shipowners that vessels other than those covered by their embargo on Saudi-linked shipping remain safe.

The Houthi rebels are gaining momentum in their fight against Saudi Arabian forces, capturing two strategic strongholds and taking control of the Red Sea..
.Houthi rebels in Yemen have captured two critical strongholds—the strategic port city of Mokha and Perim Island—giving them effective control over the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and the southern entrance to the Red Sea. This rapid offensive against Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces marks a massive escalation, shattering a multi-year truce and jeopardizing Saudi Arabias primary remaining maritime oil export routes.
Strategic Strongholds Captured
- Mokha (Mocha): Houthi forces seized this highly strategic port city. It was the last major harbor under the full control of Yemens internationally recognized government. Its capture cuts off critical anti-Houthi supply lines running south to Taiz.
- Perim Island (Mayun Island): Located directly inside the 28-kilometer-wide Bab al-Mandeb Strait, this island chokepoint splits the crucial maritime channel linking Asia to Europe. Seizing it grants the Houthis a literal stranglehold over regional.

Impact on Saudi Arabia and Global Trade
Maritime Blockade: The Houthis declared a naval blockade specifically targeting Saudi-flagged vessels while claiming other commercial shipping remains safe. This directly cripples Saudi Arabias ability to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has also heavily restricted0
-
- Energy Disruptions: Parallel drone and missile attacks on Saudi mainland infrastructure forced the temporary shutdown of the countrys East-West crude pipeline. Consequently, global oil prices have spiked past $110. a barrel.
-
- .Military Escalation: Saudi-backed coalition forces have responded with waves of retaliatory airstrikes along the western coastline to stem further Houthi movement, while cross-border Houthi projectile attacks continue to target southern Saudi cities like Abha and Jizan.
