20260904, a crowd in the Russian city of Khabarovsk cheered as a 50-foot bronze soldier was unveiled in the city center.

His rifle butt is frozen mid-swing, smashing a stone border marker stamped with Japans chrysanthemum crest.
Locals already have a name for him: "Ivan."
The monument celebrates the Soviet Unions "victory over Japan" in 1945, and the marker he is smashing is a copy of the one that once divided Sakhalin between Russia and Japan.
Moscows explanation: the chrysanthemum is "a symbol of Japanese militarism."
Japans consulate fired back: it is Japans national flower, the crest of the Emperor, and the emblem on the cover of every Japanese passport.
By Friday, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi had seen enough.
"Utterly unacceptable," she wrote, announcing that Tokyo had formally demanded Russia halt the installation and remove it.
Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi added that Japan will keep pressing until it comes down.
Khabarovsk, for the record, is where thousands of Japanese prisoners were held in Siberian labor camps after the war ended.
Russia calls it history. Japan calls it an insult to the Emperor.

(The Chrysanthemum and the Sword),

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded to Takaichi’s comments, telling Russian state-controlled news agency RIA Novosti: “All that remains is to demand that the wind stop blowing and the sun stop shining.” She described Russian history as “based on facts” and said its memory had been “enshrined in a monument.”

The monument was installed on the Amur River embankment in the far-eastern city of Khabarovsk. According to a statement by the regional government, it was created on instructions from Vladimir Putin with the participation of the Russian Military Historical Society. The project was designed by sculptor Denis Stritovich, architect Vadim Frolov, and artist Ilya Khrabry.

The main figure is 15 meters (49 feet) tall, while the monument’s pylons bear the names of the Soviet Far Eastern and Transbaikal fronts, the Pacific Fleet, and the Amur Flotilla. The unveiling was attended by Khabarovsk regional governor Dmitry Demeshin, representatives of the Russian Military Historical Society, military personnel, and delegations from the Chinese and North Korean diplomatic missions..

Russias new bronze statue angers Japan! Soviet soldiers "destroy the Chrysanthemum Emblem with guns" Japan: Unacceptable.

Japan has strongly protested and demanded the removal of a newly unveiled 15-meter bronze World War II monument in the Russian Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk. Unveiled on September 4, 2026, the statue depicts a Soviet Red Army soldier using the butt of his rifle to smash a historical stone border marker engraved with a chrysanthemum—the 16-petalled flower emblem used by the Japanese Imperial Family and widely recognized as the de facto symbol of Japan.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi condemned the installation as "completely unacceptable" and "extremely regrettable in terms of Japanese national sentiment".
Key Details of the Dispute: The Monuments Meaning: Built under the orders of Vladimir Putin, the statue replicates a genuine Russo-Japanese border marker that once divided Sakhalin Island. Russia claims the monument commemorates the 1945 Soviet victory over "militarist Japan". The Russian Military Historical Society argued that the chrysanthemum emblem represents WWII-era militarism rather than just the modern state.
    • [Russias Refusal: The Kremlin formally rejected Japans requests to dismantle the monument or modify the imagery. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova dismissed the complaints, stating that Russian history is "based on facts" and "enshrined in a monument".
      • Bilateral Tensions: Relations between Tokyo and Moscow have sharply deteriorated. This monument controversy closely follows Vladimir Putins provocative visit to the disputed Kuril Islands (referred to as the Northern Territories in Japan), a territorial dispute that has prevented the two nations from ever signing a formal peace treaty to officially end World War II. ].
