Chinese Go (Weiqi) professional Wei-Tang Liang 9P put on a brilliant display of technical virtuosity for a captivated audience of 50 Go fans in a special event at the Rockville United Church in Rockville, MD on Tuesday August 14, 2012. “Six players obtained opportunities to learn from Liang 9P in the simul teaching games.” The event organizer Zhiyuan ‘Edward’ Zhang told EJ. “The strength of a professional player is definitely fascinating—the group have a few players as strong as 5 dan yet with 5~9 stone handicap only one Korean player Insu Kim is able to win with just a few points.” The event is brought by a collective effort by the Capital Go Club of the American Go Association (AGA), the Great Falls Go Club, the Rockville Go & Chess Group (RGCG), and the Rockville Sister City Corporation (RSCC), and Transamerica Financial Advisors, Inc. “I come to attend the US Go Congress on behalf of the China Qiyuan and Chinese Go Association.” Mr. Liang 9P gives a brief talk at the event opening. “And I have heard that the Go activities in the Washington DC metro area have been impressive and famous, and very happy to spend the evening with so many American Go players.” click here for a video clip of the event by Tie-Hua Ng (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?fromEmail=true&formkey=dEkwQk80X0R0Nm1WSEVMY3FRRjdVb2c6MQ) The event included a simultaneous exhibition involving six players, a mini AGA rated tournament, and an open forum for questions and game commentary analysis. This event features great diversity of players, probably a result of advertisement in social network and newspaper in English, Korean and Chinese. “The event was a huge success.” John Goon concluded. “Not only we see may new faces of local Go players, but also receive a professor player’s inquiry on starting a Go club in the Howard University in Washington DC.” In the AGA rated tournament which ran in parallel with the simultaneous, “Liang Yu 7d is 2-0 with impressive wins over Juan Pablo Quizon 6d and Meng Lu 6d.” Tournament Director Todd Heidenreich reports.
