(Indifference III)

You think that Distance is a measure of differences. You say: the farther we are apart, the more different we become. I say: the farther we are apart, the less we have to concern about Distance.

Distance decides where we are geographically. If each of us is on each side of the ocean, we expect different day and night. You wouldn’t choose to go to bed at the same time as I would. You would not be willing to pay such a price to reduce our difference. I am tired, so I go to bed. I know when you are tired, you stop doing whatever you do, you walk to bed, sit down, straighten your blanket, and then you lie down and close your eyes.

Distance determines our economical contexts. When you enjoy harvests, I suffer the winds and the earth trembling. We expect differently from God. We know ourselves differently. These are not only the differences between genders and races. Our languages (especially the praying languages) and beliefs would be different, too. At this moment, we watch the same sky. We listen to the ancestors’ stories. We hum our children’s tune.

Distance fulfills our imagination of love. Gradually, in your mind, you turn me into the way you like. You cannot bear conventions, so I become extraordinary. In my mind, you gradually become yourself. I travel in my memory. I stop at your cheek. I sit next to you for a long long time. When time is no longer time, I don’t sit next to you any more. You become yourself.

Dear you, I am the same as you. We are the same as many many people in the world. We have to face the tides and waves. We experience the change of day and light. We carry such a heavy burden over us. We decide our love. However, my dear, please don’t be afraid. We are turning the same wheel as the stars. We are as young as blooming flowers and as old as the mountains. You and I are not alone.
