作者Benny Andersson＋Björn Ulvaeus製作成一首歐式流行抒情曲．

歌曲以抒情清唱起頭，中間進入中板節奏

歌詞反映一段關係的結束。   

１９７９年夏天，Ulvaeus和Andersson在維格斯島的一間小屋開始創作。

據Andersson說，這首歌的想法是突然從他們「舊的想法、舊的小音樂作品」中產生的。

樣本帶的原始標題是［The Story of My Life／我一生的故事］，此曲第一個編曲是快節奏的，節奏恆定。

然而，他們覺得自己的第一次努力“過於生硬和有韻律”，因此將這首歌擱置幾天，同時開始創作其他歌曲。

四天后，他們重新開始創作這首歌，Andersson想出了使用法國香頌風格的編曲、下降的鋼琴線和寬鬆的結構的想法。

隨後，Ulvaeus用無意義的法語單字作為歌詞錄製了一段小樣，並將錄音帶回家為［The Winner Takes It All］寫了歌詞。

據烏爾瓦烏斯說，他在寫作時喝了威士忌，這是他寫得最快的歌詞。

他說：“我喝醉了，一小時內我就在激動的情緒中想到了整首歌詞。”

Ulvaeus說，當他把歌詞交給 Fältskog 時，「她的眼裡湧出了一兩滴淚水。因為這些歌詞確實影響了她。」

Ulvaeus 否認這首歌是關於他和Fältskog 的離婚的，他說這首歌的基礎是「離婚的經歷，但它是虛構的。因為我可以說的一件事是，在我們的案例中沒有贏家或輸家」 .
