To Stillness
萬物有聲籟,嘆我不能聽;
文字未說前,天地沉默運;
All things send forth their piping; deaf, I sigh:
Eternity is far, this sound more nigh,
Soundless yet mellow, boundless as the sea;
My thoughts sing counterpoint to melody.
Before all words, the heavens wheel unheard;
Embraced by you, the heart to prayer is stirred.
Let trumpets blaze, let glad strings fill the air:
They cannot win; you bear what sound can’t bear.
O Silence, hear: if held within my breast,
Will you at last show me, in motion, rest?
Or must ten thousand deeds unveil in me
A calm like yours, as boundless as the sea?
