This was the Champion American Cask Ale voted at the BSF bar, Great British Beer Festival 2009. http://gbbf.camra.org.uk/americancaskbeer According to the description in the Beer Programme, this funny-named ale is brewed in the “Imperial Russian Stout” style, aged in previously-used American Bourbon Whisky barrels for two years before being released in either bottled version or on tap. Here, we got the great chance to taste this ale in the traditional Cask-Conditioned Version, and it proves to be ama…zing indeed~~ * Basic Information: Beer name: YouEnjoyMyStout (Cask-Conditioned) Brewery: Alc. by Volume: 10.5% Tasting Date: Notes: Tasted at the BSF bar, GBBF 2009, poured on gravity straight from the firkin into a 1/3 pint-sized tall sniffer. * Appearance (4/5): the colour is jet black, poured with no head (normal for a gravity pour) and low carbonation, while a swirl gives a hint at the semi-thick body of this ale, with tears left on the walls of the glass… * Aroma (4.5/5): the nose is really dense and rich, featuring lots of ruby port notes and American white oak’s woodiness, plus banana esters, thick date & prune jam, fine smokiness from Lowland Scottish whisky casks, allowing only a narrow passage way for aromatic hops to sneak through. Interestingly, the whisky oakiness is potent while maltiness is understated as far as the beer style is concerned. * Taste (4.5/5): sweetness of malts and banana-ish esters precede a fine, smoked black-prune-ish fruity body, before the bitter chocolates, dry hops, dried hawthorn fruits and bitter nuts kick in. Oakiness dominates the aroma and finish, along with a really thirst-quenching, dry-ish/tannic touch as of wooden (oak) casks, a bit like a dry sherry, plus more traces of black prunes, understated hoppiness and a fine warming touch of alc. in the very end. * Mouthfeel/Palate (4.5/5): mellow mouthfeel, soft carbonation, good balance, 100%-bodied but never aggressively alcoholic… * Overall Remark (4.5/5): Although this cask-conditioned oak-aged RIS does not come extremely complex, it is ever so… drinkable and delicious all the same. --Yau ( |
