別再嚴肅地生活 How to lead a happy life? (Don’t lead a serious life!) |  by Sadhguru (薩古魯)

Q: What are the best practices for someone who is “dead serious” that You referred it last night?

A: Dead, or serious? Yeah, I said it last night.

Once it happened that there was a Sufi Master in Basta.

Basta is a place famous for pearls in Iraq today, or it is famous for the bombing, whichever way you say.

One person came and said to him, “Please give us a teaching”.

But Sufi Master refused.

Still, there are more and more people came and asked him to give them teachings. But he always refused.

However, because of his refusal to give people teachings made him very famous then.

One day, there was a great scholar in the area who was well-versed in all the scriptures and everything, who came, insisted, and said to Sufi Master, “You must teach because you look like you have something that no scholar can have.

And I’m beginning to realize that and you must teach.

You cannot keep it to yourself”.

And then, Sufi Master looked at him and said, “ I am not going to give you a teaching, not because I am not willing, but because you are not willing ”.

The scholar said, “What are you saying that I am not willing? I’m here and I’m the one asking you to teach, but you said that I’m not willing”.

Then Sufi Master said that the teaching that “The teaching I am going to give it to you that you will not be willing”.

The scholar then asked, “What is the teaching?”

Sufi Master asked him, “Are you willing”?

The scholar said, “ Anything. I’m willing.”

“Anything I teach you, you are willing”? asked Sufi Master.

So Sufi Master went inside and brought him a dirty-looking piece of cloth and said to him,” you wear it as your loin cloth. Take off all your robes and clothes, wearing this as your loincloth”.

The scholar looked at the dirty piece of loincloth and hesitated.l

Sufi Master then said that “Not just this, I will give an empty can with a string, so that you wear it around your neck. Also, I will give you a few sweets, some pieces of peppermint, so that you can go to the marketplace and all the young boys will tease you and throw stones at you. Whoever throws stones at you, grin at them, and give them your peppermint”.

The scholar said that “ It’s ridiculous. What will happen in this town, if I do such a ridiculous thing”?

Then Sufi Master said, “ I told you. You are not willing for the teaching”.

The question is just this, “Do you want a teaching that you like or something that transforms you? That’s the question”.

So likewise now, you’re asking this kind of question, “ I am dead serious, how am I to live”?

The most important and foremost thing is that you must make yourself non- serious which is not possible.

And the only way to make yourself non-serious is to make yourself ridiculous.

Can you do that?

For example, can you get up and do a jig right now? Do it. And you do it the Indian way. Do the Indian jig right now”.

Look. You are still serious, but not dead.

Remember that you must loosen your life a little bit.

Laugh a little more.

Involve yourself with people around you, and do things that you think are not important.

Do more little and simple things.

It’s very important that you do simple things.

If you always do important things in your life, you will become more deadly serious.

You know the English man, Bertrand Russel.

He said,“ If you are beginning to think that what you are doing is very important, then you need to take a holiday”.

So that taking a holiday does not mean coming to India.

It means that every day, in 24 hours, you must have a holiday from your seriousness.

For yourself, seriousness has come essentially because of your self-importance. You hold yourself as a very important person.

I would like to see that you are like a speck of dust in this existence.

Tomorrow morning, if you disappear from India, for sure, nobody will miss you, even in Down Under (in Australia).

People don’t bother much, you know.

A handful of people will also forget you soon enough, isn’t it so?

Nothing will happen in this world, and everything will go on wonderfully well even if you’re not here.

Every human being should remember this every moment in his/her life.

It doesn’t matter what the whole world says about you, or how significant the work you’re doing is.

You must understand that tomorrow morning, the whole world will still go on fine without you, whoever you may be, isn’t it so?

If you constantly remind yourself of this, you’ll have no reason to be serious. Definitely not dead. Don’t be dead now, okay?

The time will come soon.

It’s time to be alive.
