在魔戒二部曲(The Lord of the Rings --- The Two Towers)第 50 段落裡的一段對話我還蠻喜歡的（當初邊看邊聽邊抄下來的內文如下），當佛羅多拿劍指向山姆時

山姆：是我呀。我是你的山姆。你不認得我了嗎？

It’s me. It’s your Sam. Don’t you remember your Sam?

佛羅多後退後拋跳手中的劍

佛羅多：我辦不到

I can’t do this, Sam.

山姆：我知道

I know.

山姆：這不公平。我們根本就不該來。但是我們來了。這就像我們聽過的精彩故事。歌頌偉大的事蹟。充滿了黑暗和危險。有時候你不想知道結局。因為怎麼可能有快樂的結局？發生這麼多可怕的事。這世界怎麼可能回到從前？但是最後可怕的陰影。。。終究會消失。。。就連黑暗也會消失。嶄新的一天將會來臨。太陽也會散發更明亮的光芒。這才是讓人永生難忘。意義非凡的感人故事。縱使你太年輕不明白為什麼。但是我想我明白了。我現在明白了。這些故事裡的主角。有很多機會半途而廢但是他們並沒有。他們決定勇往直前。因為他們抱著一種信念。

It’s all wrong. By rights, we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes, you didn’t want to know the end… because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was… when so much bad bad happened? But in the end, It’s only a passing thing… this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you… that meant something even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Fordo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories… had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going… because they were holding on something.

佛羅多：我們抱著什麼信念？

What are we holding on to, Sam?

山姆走過去扶起佛羅多

山姆：這世上一定存在著善良值得我們奮戰到底。

That is there’s some good in this world, Mr. Fordo. And it’s worth fighting for.
