"Power
tends to corrupt. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men
are almost always bad men. even
when they exercise influence and not authority. “---
Lord Acton( 1834-1902)
Every
time when people quote Lord Acton's famous axiom,
more often than not they relate these words to politicians with enormous power in the government who
tend to abuse their tremendous power tremendously. Actually Lord Acton's axiom fits almost all situations
in our real life. Whether it is in politics, in military, or in
business world. In
film-makingbusiness,for
example, when
a director's fame, reputation, credibility, and popularity rise
dramatically, his power increases while his sense of morality
decreases. When his power and clout increase immensely, his sense
of morality ceases to exist.
Yes, power does actively change a person. It doesn't matter whether
he is a good man or a bad man and it doesn't matter whether he is a
politician or a filmmaker. If you take a look at what Chen X Bian
did in the past 8 years, you should have no difficulty understanding
why a respected and beloved director with enormous popularity and
power could corrupt enormously. In political system, there is a
mechanism called checks and balances to restrict the possibility of
abuse of power by the ruler. But in film-making business, where is
the system to prevent an extremely powerful filmmaker from misusing
and abusing his power?
When
that obscene movie was released, without even knowing the details of
how the director made that pornographic-like movie and how he got his
actors perform such extremely salacious actions on a big screen
movie, the opinion leaders, college professors, writers, journalists
..., in order to express how much they love him and his
“masterpiece”, began to kiss his ass, showering their idol with
confetti to celebrate his “achievement”. They wrote plenty of
beautiful and seemingly convincing enough articles to overwhelmingly
praise him for what he did and presented him with the best director
award. Few people questioned the legality or morality of that movie.
It appeared that questioning him for why he allowed a lot of
salacious actions appearing on the big screen would be ridiculed for
being “too conservative” and that bashing him for what he did
would be labeled as “ jealous of him or jealous of his
achievement“.
Opinion
leaders in our society are those who are able to persuasively express
their ideas and opinion to serve as a model to others. Most of them
are well-educated and have the power to influence the attitudes and
behavior change of their followers. Their comments are usually
significantly noticed and may be followed by many other people. If
the influential opinion leaders started endorsing that movie, telling
the vast majority of the people how great that movie was, then it
would take a lot of courage to stand up to fight against them, because few
people would be on your side. Few people could see the dark side of
that stolen movie.
But when the Chinese government made a decision to
punish that movie's leading actress for her pornographic actions.
The once sizzling director who manipulated everything in making that
obscene piece of shit seemed to be fizzling and chose to keep his mouth shut. His
silence raised an interesting question. If he didn't do anything
wrong in making that movie, why didn't he honestly tell the Chinese
government what really happened? Why didn't he take actions to bail
out his innocent leading actress? If he is a director who wants to
be a pioneer and plans to do unprecedented things to amaze his
country or shock the world, then he has to be prepared to face the
possible consequences. Nothing comes for free. Everything in this
world has a price. Why did he refuse to pay the price? Now his
leading actress is facing almost career-ending punishment. Why did
he behave like a coward to avoid taking the responsibility he's
supposed to take?
The
real reason he didn't do that is because the making of that movie was
a fraud. The movie was illegally and immorally made with a lot of
forbidden actions on and off the big screen. If he chose to “turn
himself in”, the Chinese officials would question him, his leading
actor and his leading actress about all the details of how he made
that movie, then the truth would come out. The truth is all the
pornographic actions on and off the big screen performed by the
leading actress were ordered by the director who changed the script,
duped, pushed and brainwashed her to accept his obscene ideas to
perform all kinds of salacious actions in order for him to watch.
It absolutely had nothing to do with the leading actress. It was
all that dictator's decision. He
did not respect the script at all. He insulted his leading actor
and his leading actress in particular and abused his power as a
director to its fullest extent for personal gain. It was an
outrageous exploitation and human rights abuse case. There is
universal consensus that all individuals are entitled to the most
basic human rights under any circumstances. Human rights are the
articulation of the need for justice, tolerance, mutual respect, and
human dignity in all of our activity. While making a big screen
movie, not an adult film, he denied her basic human rights in order
to get what he wanted, having her perform the most salacious actions,
making her suffer from a huge, huge humiliation and taking away her
human dignity completely.
His
outrageous behavior was a sheer challenge to law.He
should be sued for(1) fraudulent practice, because he changed the
script without letting her know before making the movie and then made
a lot of efforts to sell his obscene ideas to dupe, push, and
brainwashed her to accept (2) sexual harassment, because he duped her
to perform these salacious actions against her will and these actions
he requested her to perform way, way, way crossed the line(3) human
rights abuse(4) misuse and abuse of power as a director(5) public
obscenity, because his movie spread a lot of human sexual intercourse
images at public places like theaters,(6) extortion, if he suggested
or hinted to his leading actress that without following his orders to
perform these extremely obscene actions, she might lose her job (7)
obstruction of justice, if he, in order to cover-up his alleged role
in this scandal, had his people spread rumor, viciously revealing to
the media that the leading actress voluntarily performed these
extremely salaciousactions in order to please the
director,(8) defamation, because part of her pornographic actions
have already been posted on porn websites. Therefore, she has been
portray as a “porn star”. Most people wouldn't treat a “porn
star” with respect, accordingly, he has severely damaged her image,
reputation, career and family welfare in the future.
He screwed her
shamelessly and outrageously. Ironically the person who got punished
is the person who got screwed, not the director! What a shame! What a
joke! Where is the justice? As of today that “national shame”
still behaves like a ball-less man, having no guts to tell the
Chinese government that he was the culprit. According
to the leading actor, there were more salacious actions performed not
seen on the big screen but requested and watched closely by the
director in the studio. Wow, Mr. director, or Mr. “ national treasure”, could
you let us know what were these actions? and why did you request a
mainstream cinema actress to perform these actions on a big screen movie
which could be seen by billions of people?
