* Collaboration can result in: sales growth, cost reduction, asset efficiency
* Collaboration Premium (CP) = Return on Project (RP) – Opportunity Costs (OC) – Collaboration Costs (CC)
* Barriers:
Not-invented-here: insulator culture; nobody wants to cross established status lines; self-reliance is lauded and preferred; people are afraid to admit their problems
Hoarding: people are in competition with their colleagues; there are no incentives for joint initiatives; everyone is too busy to help others; people lose power by sharing information
Search: hard to search a large enterprise for ideas; physical distance makes searching impractical; people suffer from information overload; there is little or no networking going on
Transfer: it is difficult to transfer tacit know-how; people may not know how to work together; weak ties may discourage knowledge pooling
* Levers:
Unification: craft a central unifying goal of some kind; create and demonstrate a core value of teamwork; create and use language that encourage collaboration
T-shape: change reward system; promote T-shaped employees; cross-unit contributions; cross-unit collaborations; recruit T-shaped managers; coach for T-shaped behavior; fire laggard
Network: build outward; build a diverse network; weak ties are better; work hard to develop bridges; always try to swarm your target; know when it’s time to switch to strong ties
* Collaborative Leadership Style: redefine success to move from narrow agendas to big goals; involve others in making more inclusive decisions; be accountable and take responsibility for mistakes
* Personal Barriers: hunger for power; arrogance; defensiveness; fear; ego
