| From "The Long Discourses of the Buddha" (DN), p. 566, notes 357-359
1st liberations: jhana is induced by observing marks in one's own body
2nd liberation: kasina (disk etc. used as meditation object) is external to one's body
3rd liberation: concentrate on the pure and bright colors of kasina
Refer to Visudhimagga (The Path of Purification) section of 40 meditation objects, especially Earth kasina and Impure meditation. Ven. Pa-Auk's explanation on Visudhimagga may also help.
I think maybe these are not taught & practiced after Yogacarabhumi was translated in China, so there was little practical guide on how to meditate using these methods. The other difficulty is you have to have 4 jhanas first before progressing in 8 liberations. |
