在這一段書摘之前，其實有一句用「底片沖洗」做為比喻的片段相當關鍵：
他們的過去就這樣堆積著無數的照相底片，一直沒有利用。因爲才智沒有把它們“沖洗”出來。

普魯斯特認為真實的生活就存在每個人身上，只是人們沒有察覺，而從這裡進一步延伸出來的概念，他甚至相信透過藝術將展現更多不同的世界：
在這種情況下，它們無疑不如使我意識到藝術作品是找回似水年華的唯一手段的那個真實燦爛輝煌，我心中升起又一股光焰。我大悟，文學作品的所有這些素材，那便是我以往的生活；我大悟，它們在浮淺的歡悅中、在慵懶中、在柔情中、在痛苦中來到，被我積存起來，未及預期它們的歸宿，甚至不知道它們竟能倖存，沒想到種子內儲存著將促使植物成長的各種養料。

Through art alone are we able to emerge from ourselves, to know what another person sees of a universe which is not the same as our own and of which, without art, the landscapes would remain as unknown to us as those that may exist on the moon. Thanks to art, instead of seeing one world only, our own, we see that world multiply itself and we have at our disposal as many worlds as there are original artists, worlds more different one from the other than those which revolve in infinite space, worlds which, centuries after the extinction of the fire from which their light first emanated, whether it is called Rembrandt or Vermeer, send us still each one its special radiance. 只有借助藝術，我們才能走出自我，瞭解別人在這個世界，與我們不同的世界裡看到些什麽，否則，那個世界上的景象會像月亮上有些什麽一樣爲我們所不知曉。幸虧有了藝術，才使我們不只看到一個世界、我們的世界，才使我們看到世界倍增，而且，有多少個敢於標新立異的藝術家，我們就能擁有多少個世界，它們之間的區別比已進入無限的那些世界間的區別更大，不管這個發光源叫倫勃朗還是叫弗美爾，它雖然已熄滅了多少個世紀，它們卻依然在給我們發送它們特有的光芒。
