All of them had a major setback of their own: a singer whose career was broken by alcohol, a woman was widowed by war and a young boy was bereaved of his father whom he would never see all his life.  What kind of the strength made them help each other and start a new life again?  Tender Mercies.

Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning actor from the film, played that alcohol-addicted singer who was a down-and-out and begged the mistress of a motel-cum-gas station to take him as a helping hand, and she did. She lost her husband who was killed in Vietnam War, and lived with his only yet nearly posthumous son, a young boy of eight or nine years old. They all hoped that they could throw themselves on someone's mercy so as to regain the right course of their lives. They did do to each other.

Without swashbucklings and cliffhangers, Tender Mercies is like a cameo, full of bouquet, vividly capturing what a humble but meaningful life should be.
