Yesterday I talked something about Korean War(June 1950 to July 1953). Then it reminded me of a popular song: "A Dear John letter". Though the term "Dear John Letter" reputedly appeared during World War Two and later became an idiom indicating the break-up letters between lovers or married couples, still the song "A Dear John Letter" was published in 1953, at the endgame of Korean War. So I think the song reflected the weariness of anti-war mindset within then America who was reluctantly to close a war it would have never had the chance to won. Similarly, during Vietnam War there was also a popular song "Mr. Lonely" that sadly recounted a lonely soldier had been long forgotten in a war of forlorn hope. Let me just tell you guys, no country in the whole wide world could win a war over China after 1949, especially in front of her gate. US and Japan, don't you ever try it again. P.S. "A Dear John Letter" is kind of a mixed chrous, the woman sings to start the letter she wrote, while the man narrated how excited to read the letter from which the contents turned out to be a broken-hearted melody. We are familiar with the song sung by Sketter Davis and Bobby Bare, but I think the original one sung by Jean Shepard and Ferlin Husky is much better. |
