A couple days ago when I read a piece of news online, I saw the word "sly". Now I cannot exactly remember where I found it, maybe it was in an article that bashed China by using the word to describe her leaders. But, as always, the word immediately associated my memory with an old song sung by The Fleetwoods in 1959: Mr. Blue. Why "sly"? Because I learnt an idiom "on the sly" from the song and has never forgotten it since my high school days. The soft, melancholy song with harmonious chord describes a spurned lover laments how is he jilted by the girl he loves. Well, the song is really irresistible to a teenager like me in early sixties. After so many years, still I love the song very much and I would like to share it with you guys. Lyrics~Mr. Blue-Fleetwoods - YouTube FYI, I’ve also learnt another idiom: "paint the town red" from the song, and I won’t forget it, either. |
