Patti Page died early this month at 85. Who is that lady? She was the "queen of waltz songs" in 50's and early 60's. During my college days, when there were no KTV, no local pop idol-groups to follow, no nothing, the only "fancy",in-door extra-curricular activity had been a residential dance party. In my memory, almost always the first song to start the party was Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz", and the final one to end the party was her "Till we meet again". Her soft, low-pitched and mellifluous voice had been the perfect match to those golden oldies of waltz in slow, regular rhythm, representing, to some extent I think, American wealthy, peaceful time of Eishenshower era. I liked her songs very much. But you know, I could not afford buying her records nor possessing a record player then. A juke-box? No kidding. All I could hear her songs was from radio occasionally. So I often went to the parties to enjoy hearing her songs, though I didn't like dancing as much. Later on, I even volunteered my services as a DJ in parties, playing as many her songs as I could. Her other great hits? Namely, "Changing partners", "I went to your wedding", "You belong to me", "Mockingbirds' hill", "Longing to hold you again", and so on, all waltzs. Log onto YouTube and listen to her songs, you lucky guys! When I saw the obituary of her decease in the papers, I knew it had been the end of an oldie but goodie time to me. All of a sudden, the news reminded me of another idol of mine: Doris Day. I googled to find out her whereabouts in no time. Thanks to God, she is still alive, now at 91.
