Don’t rest on our laurels

The fundamental principle of management is the process of planning, execution and evaluation.  Security management is no exception. Throughout experiencing relatively continual incidents, whether fatal ones or GDIs, we believe that the company has built as many sophisticated action plans in our security system as possible, and we must have faithfully and painstakingly carried them out, no doubt about it.  Can we just say the notions of security are here to stay, and rest assured that the company is now in good hands?  No, of course not.  We need an overriding system to update, supervise, audit and evaluate the jobs we have been doing periodically, and finally achieving a perfect quality assurance.

Only through corporate security evaluation, can we justify if our security system is working smoothly and our jobs being done more effectively. Constant evaluation not only makes our quality control intact, but also gradually fosters a safety-is-paramount culture that is to be deeply ingrained in every one of us, forming a conceptual model and a work ethic towards security-related details, just like part of everyday life of each and every employee.  Sounds like easier said than done, isn’tit?  I am confident that Corporate Safety Division have devoted their entire energy and thought to all aspects concerning security, including various planning, SOPs, certificates, dissemination etc., still I do not think that any division alone could make that “everyday life” happen. The ultimate risk-free environment hinges on how every one of us devote himself/herself to that lofty cause spontaneously. Corporate S afety Division can only do to help.

Recently deceased Mr. Wang Yong-ching, founder of Taiwan Plastic Group, was known as having been hardworking, punctilious and frugal.  He brought all of the virtue into the Group, becoming a deep-rooted notion embedded in the heart of every employee. Therefore unswerving pursuing systematization, carrying through cost-down, and haggling over deals with others have been really part of their everyday life.  Employees are so accustomed to the practices that they regard them as moral obligation to protect the interest of the Group.  I think that kind of culture is the key to success for Taiwan Plastic Group.  I hope someday we will do the same.  In addition to those basic traits of the virtue, we should add on the risk-adverse characteristic to our corporate culture, for transporting passengers or cargo for where they are destined safe and sound is the quintessence of airline business, so safety is our ultimate commitment to the public and ourselves, no matter what.

Incidentally, I remember that several years ago Corporate Safety Division issued to every employee a piece of laminated card with reporting phone numbers on it, urging everyone use it in case of emergency. Does anyone still keep that card in his or her pocket, or even remember the life-saving numbers? Never mind.  Nowadays almost everyone has owned himself/herself a cellular phone, and I hereby recommend every employee insert the emergency number into the storage of communication list. More importantly, pick up your phone and call that number whenever urgently needed. Corporate Safety Division can oversee andmake sure the number is properly stored in each cellular phone of all employees’.  The significance of this process is not just telling every one that there is a phone number connecting the company’s security, rather it is an educational process telling every one that corporate safety is everybody’s responsibility, not someone else’s. Fasten on security, and none of us are able to sit back and relax, not a single minute. It’s not a counsel of perfection, and it’s not rocket science, either. Let’s just do it!
